First OIU Mental Health Walk – April 2025
Tuesday, 18 March 2025

Following last month's newsletter on the importance of community, we're excited to announce our first Mental Health Walk. Join us on Friday, 11th April, at 7am at Centennial Park, meeting at the Fearnley Grounds "Greenhouse Café" (near the kids' bike track). We aim to rotate locations based on where participants are coming from—so stay tuned for future walks!

The Gut-Brain Connection: How Your Diet Affects Mental Health Have you ever noticed how a few weeks of healthy eating can improve your mood and mental clarity? In recent years, research has revealed a powerful link between gut health and mental well-being. The gut is home to trillions of bacteria that play a crucial role in digestion, immune function, and brain health. Known as the gut-brain axis, this connection means that what we eat directly impacts mood, cognitive function, and emotional resilience. A diet rich in whole foods, fibre, and probiotics can promote a balanced gut microbiome, reducing inflammation and supporting the production of key neurotransmitters like serotonin—often called the "happiness hormone." On the other hand, processed foods and excessive sugar may contribute to gut imbalance, potentially leading to anxiety and depression.

For those interested, the BBC has a great article on this topic , and a great book "Brain Maker" by Dr. David Perlmutter for deeper insights.
