LEFT (THE) FIELD - UPDATE FROM RUGBY WORLD CUP
Friday, October 20
Our Intrepid reporter Michael Fahey (OR80) was amongst a group of Old Ignatians that were (fortunate) enough to travel to France for this years Rugby World Cup. He filed from Lyon following the Australian Fiji game,

"The Aussie's were out in force at St. Ettiane. It is a 45 min fast train from Lyon. The Rugby Village half way from station to ground was a good break with shade, food and now beer queues. Meet a number of former OIRFC players..James Dosser (OI) was wearing the club jersey and he was with Michael Ferrier (former coach) and Paul Timmins (OJ 79 a Life Member). A group of 1980 school mates took advantage of Carl Emberson being in town to support Fiji (He manages the Punta Mita Resort that was the Main donated prize at this years Sports lunch - thanks Carl ED) with him were Denis Facer, Peter McGrath and Bob Coulthurst. The anthem was great and the French in crowd supported Fiji. As to the game?....Australia were poor, conceding 18 penalties and kicked what ball we had dead 4 times. Fiji decimated us at the breakdown wining maybe 11 Jackels to our 4. Even more Aussies are due to come for the Wales game, in the bigger stadium in Lyon in a week. Mercifully it will be rugby weather then. "

We all know how our campaign ended but thanks indeed Michael for the words and pics.
