1990 'VIEW OLD BOYS TRIUMPHANT AT GOLD CHALLENGE
Wednesday, 18 October 2023
Friday and Saturday October 6 and 7, saw the holding of the 24th GPS Gold Challenge, held every 2 years, bringing together the Old Boys of the 9 GPS schools who have reached the milestone age of 50 years. The event was founded by Shore old boy David Hutchinson and was first held at Riverview in 1999.

Newington kindly hosted this year’s event, with the Alumini Years of 1989 and 1990 participating in separate sporting competitions across 10 events – golf, shooting, rowing, tennis, indoor cricket, basketball, touch footy, athletics, swimming. The day concluded with a gala dinner and a debate between the schools which did not disappoint, with MC John Meagher and Russ Fealin (Riverview Parent) attempting to bring some order to the proceedings.

The popularity of the Event has grown enormously over the years and the more than 600 old boys participated in the weekend this year.  Funds are also raised and according to David Hutchinson, over $300k has been donated over the years to the Redkite Foundation.

There was universal praise for the event. Member of the winning 1990 VIII Julian Delany gleefully summed up the sentiment of his weary cohort.

“What an event, what an incredible few days! The Gold Challenge proved that the Old Ignatian spirit is alive and very special. The sports events created a fantastic atmosphere that sparked memories from years gone by along with updates from all about life and family today. I was lucky enough to be part of the winning rowing crew who had 7 of the 1990 members in attendance along with a swim team that had plenty of laughs at the pool - and a win! The debate on the night was incredible  -  so many laughs! Congratulations to all that created the event and thanks to our leads John Meagher and Tim Eisenhauer who rallied us together. Julian Delany OR 1990"

GPS Gold Convenor Ron Ross (OR75) did a power of work to make the weekend a success and congrats on behalf of the Union. Alumni Years for 1991 & 1992 will be lining up in October 2024.
