The Career of Bernard Derriman (OR91).
Thursday, 26 June 2025

Continuing the initiative to promote Old Boys in the creative arts, we are delighted to profile the career and reflections of Emmy Award winning animator and producer, Bernard Derriman (OR91).

Bernard Derriman is an animator and director with over 30 years' experience in the industry.

He began his career at Walt Disney Studios in Sydney, Australia, where he worked on both television and feature productions. Bernard has made several award-winning shorts and videos, most notably the video "Everyone else has had more sex than me" for the Australian band TISM, and created the online series "Arj and Poopy" with comedian Arj Barker. More recently he directed and animated the video for "Laugh Track" for the band The National. He also directed episodes of Mike Judge's "Beavis and Butthead" and Jonah Hill's "Allen Gregory".

In 2010, Derriman began working on the FOX series "Bob's Burgers" from Sydney and moved to Los Angeles the following year. He is currently a producer on its 15th season and has received two Emmy Awards for his contributions to the show. Along with series creator Loren Bouchard, Derriman co-directed "The Bob's Burgers Movie".

Reflecting on his time at Riverview, Bernard said, "What I learnt about art during my years at Riverview (1986-91) was the foundation of my later career in animation. This is why I will forever be grateful to the art teachers, such as Peter Hardy and Tony Moore, who encouraged me to pursue my interest in drawing and cartoons all the way through to my final Year 12 artwork. I'm also grateful for the friends I made at Riverview, many of whom are my closest friends to this day. When I meet someone in the US who has had a Jesuit education, (often from Loyola High School in Los Angeles), I always sense a natural bond between us."
