John Francis (OR87), Director of the agricultural consultancy firm Agrista, recently offered listeners a compelling look into his professional evolution and problem-solving philosophy as a special guest on the 'Digging Deeper' podcast. The former jackaroo and agronomist discusses the keys to effective farm management and his passion for agriculture. Based in Wagga Wagga, Francis recounted his move into farm management consultancy, driven by 'a quest to acquire financial skills.'

'It was during this period,' he shared on the podcast, 'that I learned the value of integrating the rigour of science and a knowledge of production systems with financial management skills,' a realisation he described as unlocking 'the key to a better understanding of farm management.'

Francis elaborated on his approach, emphasizing what he has learned since that pivotal moment: 'the value of regular assessment of farm performance at both a financial and production level, and taking an evidence-based approach to problem-solving.' Beyond technical expertise, Francis also revealed a deeper layer of his professional development: 'I have also developed an interest in behavioural economics and social psychology,' he told the hosts, 'which has been as much a journey of discovery of myself as it has been about how my clients think and act.' His dedication to the field shone through as he stated, 'I am passionate about solving problems in agriculture.' Francis finds enduring motivation in the sector's inherent dynamism, noting, 'Part of the appeal of agriculture to me is that it is always presenting new challenges. It is this dynamic feature of the industry that keeps me motivated and inspired regardless of the frustration caused by some of these challenges.'

Listeners of Digging Deeper were treated to these and other insights from Francis's extensive career, offering a blend of practical advice and thoughtful reflection on the agricultural industry.
