Update on #HeartbeatsforXav
Tuesday, 13 August 2024

Many of us will remember the sudden death of Xavier O'Grady (OR2019) from a heart attack in 2022 while participating in a fun run with his family. Following this tragic event, Xavier's family established the #HeartbeatsforXav fundraising campaign to research the underlying genetic variant that caused his death.

Over $1 million was raised through the campaign in 2023 and has allowed for the following initiatives to be established;

1. A PhD scholarship for 3.5 years awarded to Yuchen Chen (CC) with a specialization in Bioinformatics which allows for deep research into genetic sequencing

2. The opening of a dedicated clinic, 1 day a month, for all families affected by SCD, situated in the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney. This will include full genetic and cardiac workups, technology support and dedicated psychological service.

3. The undertaking of a book proposal by Alison O'Grady, Xavier's mother, to examine the stories of those taken by this insidious disease and to look at notions of 'survivorship'.

This weekend marks the 5-year reunion of the class of 2019. As this year's group gather to celebrate and connect, his absence will undoubtedly be a difficult time for his family and class mates. Xavier loved Riverview and, as his short life proved, was dedicated to the principles of justice and acting in the service of others. Lets remember Xavier this weekend and proactively look out for each other during this time.
