Warren Rugby Club Turns 70.
Thursday, 11 July 2024

On Saturday 29 June, all roads lead to Warren as the local Rugby Club put on a gala weekend to celebrate its 70th anniversary. The highlight of the day was a golden oldies match that preceded the main first grade fixture between Warren Pumas and the Walgett Rams. The weekends festivities also included a Black-Tie ball in the hall, after the first-grade game.

I spoke briefly to Harry Gaynor (OR2013) who was referee for the legends game and current coach for the Warren female rugby side. "It was great to have all the former players back to celebrate the milestone, including my grandfather Michael McKay (OR1950), who together with his cousin Ian McKay OR1950) and Barry Beach (OR1950), were some of the founding member/players of the club." The Game included a re-enactment of the famous NSW "up the jumper" manoeuvre, wisely ignored by the referee.

The player who had the ball up his jumper was also an Old Ignatian, Ben Egan (OR2006). The stands were packed with Brennans, O'Briens, Quigleys, Noonans and McKays representing some of Riverview rugby's finest fromm the club's earliest days. Another highlight was having super-sub local identity "Bomber" Moxham (93 years old) take the field with 2 minutes on the clock and miraculously score in the corner.

The weekend's celebrations exemplify how strong the community bonds of Rugby still are in the bush. A great weekend was had by all.
