TONY ABBOTT (OR75) RETURNS TO RIVERVIEW
Wednesday, 22 October 2025

Tony Abbott (OR75) returned to Riverview College on Tuesday 21st October to discuss his ambitious history project — a book entitled "Australia: A History" and three-part documentary — with HSC Modern History and Extension History students.

Speaking in the College Theatrette, Tony — who served as Australia's 28th Prime Minster — told the students gathered that Australia is not perfect but still has "a history to be proud of", and that through his book and documentary he was seeking to promote a better understanding of our country.

"It's an account of how modern Australia has developed, which doesn't gloss over our failures but sees the positive side too – especially how the promise of liberty and equality for all slowly but surely became a reality, and much sooner here in Australia than almost anywhere else in the world." said Tony.

Following his address, Tony Abbott was led in a question-and-answer session by Principal Mark Tannock. He said that he hoped the boys recognised that Australia's history is "an overwhelmingly positive story", adding that Australia is "a land built by heroes, both known and unknown".

At the end of formalities, College Rector Fr Tom Renshaw (OR90) accompanied Mr. Abbott through to the quadrangle where he enjoyed an afternoon tea with the students.
