An article in the Daily Telegraph ran with the storyline:" Saint Ignatius' College Riverview has been crowned heavyweight champion of GPS sport." The analysis of the eight GPS schools across six key sports – rugby, rowing, athletics, basketball, soccer and cricket – relates to the period from 2000. The article pointed out that the sporting results of the College were not the result of scholarships but the decision to employ "outstanding coaches" to help the boys improve in their chosen athletic endeavours. The evidence of this commitment continues today as the College's Tennis Co-ordinator Jaymon Walsh was one of the Australian team coaches at the Olympics, Track & Field Co-ordinator Cathy Walsh coached the Australian women's 4x100m track relay team also at the Olympics, and Basketball Co-ordinator Tom Garlepp coached the Under 17 Women's Australian Basketball team to a 5th place finish at the recent World Championships. |
