Support the Jesuit Refugee Service
Thursday, 11 December 2025

St Ignatius of Loyola called on Jesuits to go where the needs are greatest. Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) continues this mandate by accompanying some of the world's most vulnerable people who have been displaced from their homelands. Founded in 1980 by Fr Pedro Arrupe SJ, former Superior General of the Society of Jesus, JRS emerged in response to the growing needs of refugees across Southeast Asia and the recognition that Jesuits were uniquely positioned to offer compassionate assistance. JRS Australia carries forward this mission today, walking alongside refugees and people seeking asylum as they work to build safe and dignified lives within the Australian community.

JRS Australia supports more than 150 families each week through its foodbank program, alongside many others who receive specialised casework support. Its Finding Safety Project assists refugee and migrant women experiencing violence in the home—women who are frequently unable to access mainstream services. JRS Australia also promotes self-reliance and community participation through its Employment Program, which equips people seeking asylum and refugees with the skills and confidence needed to enter the workforce. The program aims to connect participants with employers, fostering the independence and dignity that meaningful employment can provide.

The OIU recently met with Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) and Fr Brett O'Neill, Country Director of JRS Australia, who expressed his gratitude for the enduring support of Jesuit communities. "We are deeply grateful for the ongoing support of Jesuit schools across Australia, including our longstanding connection with St Ignatius' College Riverview. If Old Ignatians are able, our current Christmas Appeal is raising funds to help us continue our work of accompanying, serving, and advocating for asylum seekers and refugees. We would love to hear from any Old Ignatians who feel able to support our programs."
