The Cardoner Project
Friday, 4 July 2025

The Cardoner project held a function for supporters and friends recently on the new rooftop at Aloysius. OIU news spoke to Cardoner CEO Stuart Salier about the event and what's the latest happenings in Broadway and beyond.

"The function was designed to invite the Cardoner community to celebrate what our organisation stands for, believes in and what our mission is, which is to celebrate young adults who are experiencing overseas immersions and local service and the impact and bearing witness to the impact it has on those young people.

"We had a couple of young people speak. One young student who shared her stories of having been in Thailand for six months and then Nepal. She was part of the leadership group that led a group of immersion participants to Nepal for three weeks In January 2024." Salier said.

I asked Stuart to give us a snapshot of numbers, in terms of growth and what the next couple of years look like.

"We are really pleased with how 2026 is shaping up. When I first arrived, we had approximately 18 people going to some locations. Admittedly, this was after COVID, so it was very much starting up again. We've now got 45 signed up to go to locations next year. And, just for your information, there's a there's a bunch of very impressive young Riverview lads who are signing up. Father Tom is doing a great job of encouraging people. And I'm sure you know, Mark Tannock has been a great supporter. That's only going to enhance things as time goes on, as he finds his feet in the school.

Salier added "Thank you to everyone for the incredible support. It's so important, I think, for those young Year 12 students especially, who are searching for meaning, to know that they have a group of wise, slightly older men who are encouraging them to continue to pursue, you know, avenues in their careers, their post school life, that might give to others and certainly the OIU is supportive of Cardoner and it is very much appreciated. We see ourselves and the Old Igntians' Union as really steeped in partnership together."

Stuart was also delighted to advise members that Cardoner will be expanding service opportunities beyond the remote village of Tipling, to the tea plantation regions of Eastern Nepal.

Finally, he wanted to please pass sincere thanks for the support of the Riverview community. "We know that you are a great supporter of our mission, and we value your ongoing contribution to our success. We hope that our updates inspire you as much as they excite us, about the powerful impacts that a Cardoner experience has on its young adult volunteers and the communities in which they serve."
