Irish Jesuit Alumni in Australia
Sunday, 16 October 2022
Alumni of Ireland’s 6 Jesuit schools will meet on the Friday 4 th November for a dinner event at 630pm at the Jesuit-run Cardoner Project on Broadway. Ireland’s Consul General for New South Wales Rosie Keane will attend the event as a guest speaker. The individual schools have held
alumni gatherings in the past, notably a Bicentennial event held for Clongowes in 2013, however this is the first time all 6 have gathered together in Australia although a similar event has been held in London.

In terms of the schools that will be represented these can broadly be divided into the three Leinster Schools and the three schools on the West of Ireland in Munster and Connaught. Regarding the Leinster schools, the eldest of these is Clongowes Wood College founded in
1814. Clongowes is a boarding school located in Country Kildare about 30 kilometres from Dublin, the original school building is a medieval castle. From an Australian perspective, Joseph Dalton SJ who founded St Ignatius College Riverview and St Aloysius College
attended the school. The first Jesuit school to be established in Dublin was Belvedere College SJ, founded recently after Clongowes in 1832. Belvedere is a day school based in Great Denmark Street in Dublin’s North Inner city. The second Jesuit school to be established in
Dublin is Gonzaga College Dublin which was founded in 1950 and is based in the suburb of Ranelagh on the southside of Dublin city next to the former Jesuit seminary of Milltown Park.
